Italian Pizza and Spaghetti Restaurant in Pyongyang

A KCTV (Korean Central Television) special on the newly opened “Iddaria Ryori Jeonmun Sikdang” (Professional Italian Cuisine Restaurant) in Pyongyang, DPRK. The focus is mainly on the restaurant’s pizza and spaghetti. Here’s the article from KCNA: “Italian Food Restaurant Pyongyang, April 28 (KCNA) — There is a restaurant specializing in Italian dishes in Kwangbok Street, Pyongyang. Its main dishes are various kinds of pizza and spaghetti dishes including pizza margherita and spaghetti vongole bianco. It also serves famous Korean and foreign dishes. Manager of the restaurant Kim Sang Sun told KCNA: There is a moving story behind the appearance of this restaurant. General Secretary Kim Jong Il took care that a restaurant specializing in Italian dishes was opened, saying the Koreans should be let to taste world- famous dishes. He took necessary measures, learning that the restaurant found it a tough row to hoe, having no cook experienced in Italian dishes. Now our cooks are just as good as Italians in making Italian dishes. No wonder the Korean and foreign customers are satisfied with the famous dishes of the world served by our restaurant.” Restaurant Location: Lat: 39° 1’20.13″N Lon: 125° 40’18.97″E 2008 재일본조선인총련합회

@pinkflower7783 See other post: “The place was pitch dark and the main dining room was empty and dark. Locals do not regularly eat there.”
zaruka 5 days ago

I think it is primarily for foreigners and most locals do not have the disposable income to eat there. It is in a nice neighborhood but the DPRK is not a consumer society.

@zaruka I thought so

MrBrozinsky  on July 16th, 2010

MusicEqualsMemories  on July 17th, 2010

Wow 20 or 30 party members living it up. Now look outside at the empty streets and roads. They represent the emptiness of Kim Jung IL’s (except for his corpulent body and lavish lifestyle) society. Wonder why you NEVER see anything about North Korea except the DMZ and Pyongyang? I guess starving people and concentration camps are a bit of a downer. If you enjoyed this video you are either a socialist/communist, a ‘dupe’, a ‘useful idiot’ or person of little or no conscience. Your choice.

@Mocktezuma111 Or maybe they do. What do you consider real pizza? Pizza Hutt and the like? Home made pizza is always better.

zaruka  on July 29th, 2010

@Warrantofficer13 Yes. I majored in modern Asian politics and always wanted to go so I went in 2008 and again in 2009 when I went into this restaurant. As a matter of fact, I leave Tuesday to go in for 11 days and will again eat at this restaurant. This time I will be in the northeast of the country with Koryo Tours. North Korea is a culturally pristine country and a photographer’s paradise. It is fine if you can stand the propaganda barrage but as we say “that is why we are here.” Fascinating.

Warrantofficer13  on July 29th, 2010

@zaruka

How did you go about the process of getting in there and how much it cost? I guess only flights in from China at the north tip? Perhaps you go by train?

zaruka  on July 29th, 2010

@Warrantofficer13 Koryo tours Beijing arranges the tour. US passport holders must fly in. We come in on the Beijing-Pyongyang flight. The cost for a tour is 1500 Euros generally. It is well worth it because Koryo has great access to people. It is actually fun to stand on the deck of the USS Pueblo or go to the DMZ on the North side. You learn quite a bit.

@Warrantofficer13 I forgot – you can see my stills on Flickr user Zaruka. I have two collections with many different sets from the visits.
